Hypnobirthing vs Hypnobabies

Hypnosis birth (also known as hypnobirthing) is often associated with the Mongan Method, which is promoted in books and classes by Marie F. Mongan. In addition there is the Leclaire Method, which is promoted by Michelle Leclaire and also known as Hypnobirthing The Original Method.

Marie Mongan is the founder of the HypnoBirthing Institute and there are numerous certified instructors throughout the country. While she does have books available the key to her program is the series of five classes (2 1/2 hours each) that teach the program. While the program has some detractors, it also has a long track record of success and many positive testimonials. But I cannot stress enough the importance of attending the classes, carefully reading the book, and practicing regularly. The biggest mistake that women make is to just read quickly through the book and then figure that they are ready to go. These situations often lead to painful births or anesthesia. While this program is not my favorite, it can work quite effectively, especially if you have excellent teachers.

Hypnobabies was founded by Kerry Tuschhoff, who was a hypno-birthing instructor at one point, but was not satisfied with the program, and felt like it was missing some key tools. As she looked for answers she discovered Gerald Kein’s Painless Childbirth Program which she found to eliminate fear and pain in childbirth. This was the foundation for Hypnobabies, which she has continued to refine over the years. It uses true medical hypnosis (the same kind of hypnosis that people have surgery with), and provides a full childbirth education program as well. Many women find the program more complete than other hypnobirthing programs and it is clearly adapted for the conditions that you will find yourself in when giving birth. While classes are available in many areas of the country, the home study course is phenomenal and eliminates the risk of having a below average instructor.
